A Bestiary of Jewels by Kevin Coates

A Bestiary of Jewels is a Free exhibition to see at the Ashmolean but I am surprised it is free because it is so good.

 

There are 2 walls with a series of pictures running along.  Most have animals in them and are mounted on a background picture.  The mounted animals are absolutely beautiful and embedded with gem colours and all kinds of detail.

My favourite was the rabbit necklace, one because I have a pet rabbit and two because it was just a great idea.

The necklace has rabbits and they are numbered in a very special way and incorporates all kinds of numerology and the ‘divine number’ system.  It is really quite cool.

You should really see this brilliant rabbit necklace for yourself if you can’t I would try and Google it because it is superb.

 

 

Coca cola, but not as you know it

This is one of the more astounding exhibitions at the Tate.  Coca-cola bottles with political messages on them.

When you drink the cola the message is revealed.  The bottles have been put in an artistic display revealing the politics that has always been in Art and exploring what politics means for the artist.

Can we get away from politics or should artists stand up to politics.  This exhibition goes through some of these questions.

It is a very different art form and something a lot of people haven’t heard of before so it will be an enlightening experience to see the show.

Francis Bacon and Henry Moore Exhibition

The Francis Bacon and Henry Moore Exhibition promises to be
a good exhibition to see.

There are sculptures and drawings from the 1950s where they
first found their fame but crowds still flock to their shows today.

They often exhibited together and this show keeps their
styles together which gives a greater visual impact.

You can wander through the whole show on until January and
free admission to members of the Ashmolean Museum.

Our lives in Western countries are like a beautiful fish
tank with all the plants and the bridge and gravel, an air pump but there is
something missing.

On the surface it looks beautiful and it takes you a while
to realise there are no fish.  But there
is something vital missing.

missing from our lives.

People don’t like total freedom, they like rules to make them

Dancing in the Streets is a real painting about women.  Women often after having their children young
need to find themselves.  Don’t do
anything that’s not really you.  Don’t be
influenced by others.  Think it through
and have your own opinions and find things that you believe in.

You need a quite hour by yourself to really find the core of
you.  Then you just need to be true to
yourself.

You need to find a couple of clubs that you can relate to for
support.

And then you will be a strong free woman like in this painting.

Field Painting 12.11, oil on canvas by Karen Purple

Karen Purple lives in Oxfordshire and takes long walks in
the countryside picking up interesting objects to remind her of her travels.

Later back in her studio she sits still and remembers the
colours of her surroundings and how the weather was.

She puts all the colours down on paper and the result was
Field Painting 12.11.
